The Art of Oil Pulling: Heal, Detox, Whiten Teeth!

It certainly sounded awful!

I read about oil pulling shortly after I started using PURE essential oils.  I never gave it much thought, it certainly sounded awful and I respectfully declined without any further thought until recently when I came across a discussion in a forum on the subject.

In summary...

Oil Pulling is a safe, simple and gentle way to bring health to your mouth, ridding it of toxins and bacteria that turn into gingivitis and eventually full blown gum disease.  There are many who claim that it can cure and prevent disease, even extending life!

Oil pulling is gaining popularity because people are having positive results with it.  The basics of oil pulling involve swishing around 1 to 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, olive oil or any other quality oil around in your mouth for 20 minutes then spitting it out, you never want to swallow it!  It's a simple therapy and completely harmless...no ingesting of medication , just a thorough cleaning of mouth by oil.

Oil Pulling was practiced in Ayurvedic medicine evolved in India and is thought to be the oldest healthcare system on earth. Modern science is suggesting that advanced gum disease can be linked to diabetes, cardiovascular problems and pre-term births. There are studies underway exploring the connection between good oral health and overall health.  Much of the bacteria we come in contact with enters through our mouth.  Oil pulling removes toxins, bacteria and microorganisms that can cause disease and health issues.  From what I understand microorganisms in the mouth are single cell with an outside layer of fatty membrane.  When you swish oil in your mouth the fatty membrane is attracted to the oil therefore, toxins and bacteria hiding in gums and tissue are sucked out during the 20 minute oil pull.  This is why you never want to swallow the end result...please spit it out in the trash!

One of the most common testimonials is whiter teeth!  I'm putting this claim to the test because I don't want to pay $400 to have the dentist bleach mine.  Crossing fingers!

Others claim benefits such as these:  reduced joint pain, opening of congested sinuses, skin disorders like eczema disappear, healing of chronic inflammation, heart disease (science ties poor oral health to heart disease and diabetes) and of course, gum disease and strengthening of loose teeth!

How do you oil pull?

It's suggested that an oil pull be done first thing in the morning before you eat breakfast.  This might pose a problem for me because coffee gets me outta bed, unlike oil pulling.  But, I'll work on that :)

All you need is a high quality vegetable based oil.  I experimented with two different coconut oils: my choice and favorite oil is Tropical Traditions Gold Label CO...that I use in EVERYTHING, including All Purpose Healing Salve.

Some sage EO users have a suggested recipe that calls for 2 drops of Oregano and 2 drops of Clove along with 1 T of Coconut Oil.  I happen to prefer 2 drops each of Shield Protective Blend and Melaleuca instead.  Two drops in two tablespoons of coconut oil makes for a smooth and slightly spicy oil pull, it's nice, it's anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and slows gum recession, awesome...just awesome!

Okay, let's get down to the nitty gritty...here's some ideas for specific oils to use when dealing with specific ailments.

Recommended EO based on issues:

_________________________________

1.  Shield:  General immune system, mouth and gum health, teeth problems, halitosis, cold, flue, sore throat, virus.

2.  Oregano:  Flu, cold, virus, sore throat, swollen glands, cold sores, herpes, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, antibiotic, anti-viral.

3.  Clove:  Mouth and gum, analgesic, anti-biotic, antiseptic.

4.  Frankincense:  Analgesic, cold and flu, mouth surgery, mouth trauma, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory.

5.  Geranium:  mouth and gum, throat, laryngitis, analgesic, antiseptic.

6.  Grapefruit: Cleansing, detoxifying, anti-septic, antibacterial.

7.  Lemon:  Cleansing, detoxifying, cold, sore throat, anti-septic.

8.  Lemongrass:  Herpes, halitosis.

9.  Melaleuca:  Cold, flu, immune system, braces irritation, gum and mouth sores, congestion, herpes, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, antiseptic.

10.  Myrrh:  Mouth, teeth and gums, cold and flu, tonsillitis, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, antiseptic.

Directions
____________________________

Take the oils into the mouth but don't swallow it.  Move the oils slowly in the mouth.  Sip, suck and pull through the teeth and under the tongue for 20 minutes.  Some people need to work up to this, I did it from the get go...just stay busy!  You want to thoroughly mix the oils with your saliva.  Swishing activates the enzymes and the enzymes draw toxins out of the blood.  As the process continues, the oil gets thinner and white.  When you're all done, spit the oil out into the garbage...do not swallow as it's full of toxins now.  Brush teeth with toothpaste.

During the oil pull the metabolism intensifies...which leads to improved health.  Very common to see loose teeth fit tighter, sores healed and a visible whitening of teeth!

I'm sold on oil pulling!  It's easy, it's economical and you don't have to say anything 20 minutes!  My mouth felt cleaner and my teeth felt like I had just come from the dentist!

I encourage you to do your own due diligence on oil pulling, it's a fascinating study in alternative health care.  Interesting to note too, with {pure} plant essence available through Spark Naturals, this age old practice of oil pulling is seeing a resurgence in popularity.

As always, enjoy 10% off every Spark Naturals order!

But it sounds fantastic.

It's recommended that you do this 4 to 5 times a week. I say, whenever you get time...is good enough!

Can you use just the oil without the EO? Right now I don't have any EO's and because my hubby and I are both looking for jobs can't buy any, I do however have olive oil and coconut oil.

I have read that sesame oil should be used. Any benefit of using coconut oil over sesame, or is it just preference?

It's personal preference. I love coconut oil for it's antibacterial antifungal properties...I feel it's a great addition to the essential oils.

I ususally do it while im in the shower. You can do it while shaving and shampooing! I will have to try adding the EO to it!

Mandy, it's best to do your oil pulling while staying busy doing something else :) Good suggestion!

Those microbes with the fatty acid membranes you speak of are different types of archaea. But we also have numerous other bacteria in our mouths as well.

I haven't added EOs to it, I like the coconut flavor fine, lol. At first it's a little strange texture wise, but once it melts it doesn't bother me anymore. I'd be worried about swishing with Oregano oil, it's soooooo spicy!!

I have 3 of Dr Bruce Fife's books on coconut and love them. I have been meaning to get his book on oil pulling and try it out. As I am a new doTERRA IPC I am excited to give this a try with the EO's! Thanks for sharing this article!

I found this on your site and wanted to try it. I'm in my 40s (so teeth staining is starting to become a reality) and I grind my teeth at night which causes a lot of problems for my teeth. I have suffered from tooth fractures and tooth loss because of this. Any stress or too much caffeine really causes my teeth grinding to go into overdrive. I tried a prescription mouth guard which was supposed to protect my teeth only to have another complication occur. The pressure from grinding my teeth while wearing the guard created an abscess pocket to form directly underneath one of my teeth. In my case the guard was not as helpful. It was quite painful and I had to go to the dentist to get it lanced(a totally embarrassing thing) and go on a course of antibiotics.

I was a little nervous to try this out despite reading all of the testimonials saying that it worked, but the next time it occurred I decided to do the oil pulling right before bed with amazing results. The pain and swelling went away by morning. I now do this twice a day. I had just run out of tooth paste when I decided to try this and a friend of mine who worked in a dental office once told me that toothpaste isn't really needed, its more for making brushing more pleasant and to freshen your breath...you can get the same results (clean teeth) as long as you brush with water. So, I did this for two weeks without toothpaste. To my amazement, my gums were getting pinker and healthier and my teeth just as white as when I was using the whitening toothpaste (my choice: Rembrandt).

I have had this (the abscess) occur once more since this happened, but I did the oil pull and had the same results. I have found that doing an oil pull works even better when used along side flossing your teeth. I floss and do a pull right after and it removes things from my teeth that the flossing missed. I am in love with oil pulling and am so glad I found this site! Thanks so much! I now use my whitening toothpaste after the pull and my teeth have gotten even whiter. I also find that the oil protects the teeth for a while after you use from getting stained so quickly. I have also gotten into the habit of swishing my mouth with water after drinking coffee, tea or soda so that they will stay white.

I get compliments with how white my teeth are and friends ask me who my dentist is so they can get a whitening treatment. When I tell them what I do some look at me like I'm crazy, but the ones who have gone ahead and tried it have seen the same results. Having white teeth at this age is so great!

A tip: The oil I use is hardened (looks like Crisco) at first and has to melt in my mouth which only takes about a min and it has a slight coconut taste. After it melts, it has the consistency of water, it's not overly oily. It's quite a strange sensation when you first do it, so you need to build up the muscle strength in order to do the 20 or 30 minutes of swishing. Do 5 min at first, or at least as long as you can, then build up to the 20 min. I've been doing this for over a month and do it for 30 min. I just watch some TV or read a book while I do it.

It's a great face moisturizer and I put it on right before bed, it doesn't take a lot. I put it on very lightly and by the time I'm ready for bed it has soaked into my face and does not stain my pillow! I also noticed that the skin tags on my face and neck are starting to go away! This has gotten me really into wanting to start looking into all of the benefits of Coconut oil and adding the essential oils to help them even further! Thank you so much for turning me onto coconut oil.

I was told to do it with Sesame Seed oil as it too has some healing properties and the taste in the mouth is not too bad. It does take awhile to work up to the 20 minutes but keep at it - it does do great things. I have noticed an improvement in my teeth colour. And so far this year have managed to stay healthy while those around me are getting sick. Feeling a bit sick today so will be trying it again to see if it helps any.

I am definitely going to try this - for many reasons. Currently my husband and I brush our teeth with charcoal powder to whiten our teeth, and it really works! Just Google it - there are Youtube videos showing how to do it. So much cheaper than whitening at the dentist! Thanks so much Rebecca for all of your wonderful research and ideas!

My husband has a tooth that has cracked and half has fallen out. He also has a bunch of cavities and his gums are swollen and it makes it painful for him to eat. I don't have On Guard, but I have lavender, melaleuca, lemongrass, lemon, slim and sassy and some oregano. I will have frankincense next month. What do you recommend starting with to get the healing going? I won't be able to get On Guard till July. Oh, and he HATES spicy stuff.

I read this a couple of weeks ago and based on the articles and the testimonials, decided to give this a try. I have recently read of the benefits of adding coconut oil to the diet and had some on hand. It definitely takes some getting used to, but OH MY! I have had a stain between my teeth for years that even after cleaning by my hygienist, does not go away and it is FADING! My teeth feel and look so much better! I have been using virgin coconut oil, because I just started building my EO inventory. I think I will add some EO in the future to add to the benefits and the variety. THANK-YOU!

I have to post again. After the second day (today is day 3) I was shocked to see results so fast. Along with other issues I have one spot that I constantly battle plaque in. After the second time using this IT IS GONE! My teeth feel different too, they feel clean even between brushing. I can't wait to see the coming benefits.

I can not thank you enough for this article, and for anyone reading this that is skeptical, TRY IT!! I was skeptical as well and trust me you will be more than happy to be proven wrong.

I have read you should not warm the oil in the microwave because it kills the "good stuff" if you are using it for health reasons. Not sure about oil pulling. =)

Corinne, I'd be more comfortable if you warmed it in the oven - I agree, I believe the microwave may alter compounds.

Hi there. Could you clarify a bit more the process of what to do with the coconut oil? I'm very new to all this stuff. :) The coconut oil I have is solid so how exactly do you melt it? I wasn't sure until I read this particular comment if I was supposed to use it solid or melt it somehow but I'm not sure how. Thank you.

At September 28, 2013 at 4:11 PM , Blogger Rebecca said...

Kim, solid coconut oil melts at 76 degrees. When you pop cold coconut oil in your mouth it will melt fast and you can start swishing :)

Thats a good question! From what I've read in some online forums...it's safe to do with braces on. You might want to do a some due diligence yourself in case you're concerned :)

I learned about this from Jillie - and tried it several months ago. I LOVE IT! I am unable to do it as regularly as I should but hope to change that by taking the Coconut oil into the bathroom! lol - then I should be able to do it everyday or close to it. The little bit that I have been doing it has seriously whitened my teeth!

I've been doing this with coconut oil for about 3 weeks and have not yet noted any significant changes in anything. I don't plan to give up tho...my coconut oil is not organic and isn't a new jar, so I will try changing that and then adding EOs. My teeth do feel cleaner though. The oil from my mouth has always stayed white tho...no brownish coloration at all.

Rebecca, I noticed a few of the oils above listed for mouth and gums but are they for maintaining oral health or reversing oral health problems? I have full blown gum disease and your article mentioned that some oils could possibly start to reverse that? I've had the "no thank you" mindset about oil pulling too but the idea of possibly reversing and restoring my gum health has me intrigued. Thanks in advance for your input. :)

I wouldn't hesitate Trixie, oil pulling isn't new - it's a tried a true and practice. I would use a high quality organic coconut oil with Melaleuca and Shield and pull every day. If you do, I'm certain you can greatly improve your situation!

I'd get him started with just oil pulling and add the melaleuca in a week or so...if he jumps into it, he might not like the combination of oils...just my two cents as I know my hubby...took him forever to finally try it. And have your husband try just before bedtime and again when he gets up (or that morning sometime) and that night...I'll bet he feels a difference in 24 hours.
