16 Ways to Use Frankincense!
Frankincense has been used in religious ceremonies and, for medicinal purposes for centuries.
It was once considered so precious that treasuries were built to house and protect this valuable commodity. The Roman Empire once coveted the Frankincense trade so much that Augustus Caesar ordered 10,000 Roman troops to invade the region in order to control Frankincense production. However, the troops never made it through the desert and had to turn back. Frankincense was of great value then and now as the challenges of sourcing Frankincense from it's indigenous home continue to make it one of the most expensive and sought after essential oils.
1. Anti-Inflammatory: Studies show Frankincense has anti-inflammatory properties, much like NSAIDS/Advil.
- Combine Frankincense with Amend or Marjoram to reduce muscle, joint and bone pain. Massage 2 drops of each with fractionated coconut oil into large joints like knee and shoulder. Half dose for smaller joints. Reapply as needed.
- Relieve inflammation in the respiratory system by diffusing Frankincense or inhaling vapors from a bowl of hot water.
- Place 2 to 3 drops of Frankincense under the tongue 1 to 2x daily to reduce inflammation, nerve issues and depression.
- Reduce gum disease, slow recession of gums by Oil Pulling with Frankincense. Add 1 drop each Frankincense and Shield and Melaleuca to 1 tablespoon of fractionated coconut oil. Swish for 20 minutes and spit into the garbage and brush your teeth! Great practice and worth reading about {HERE}.
- Get rid of stubborn headaches by placing 1 drop of Frankincense on pad of thumb, pressing the essential oil on the roof of mouth and holding for several seconds.
- For Restless Leg Syndrome relief, apply 2 drops Frankincense with carrier oil to the bottom of each foot and massage each night.
2. Anti-aging: Frankincense is beneficial for various skin conditions including the lessening of wrinkles and reduction of age spots. Many have found a bonus side effect of applying Frankincense on the face, improved vision!
- To reduce fine lines around eyes, blend equal parts Frankincense, Cypress, Lavender and fractionated coconut oil in a glass roller bottle. Dab on facial bones surrounding eyes morning and night after washing face, careful not to get too close to the eyes! Dilute with carrier oil if you so.
- Apply Frankincense neat, (undiluted) to uneven skin tone.
- Add a drop of Frankincense to your moisturizer with every use!
- Apply undiluted to acne or occasional breakouts.
- Apply with a little fractionated coconut oil to wounds to reduce scarring. Great for stretch marks.
3. Immunity Enhancer: Whether it be from bacteria, virus or external toxins that we come in contact with on a daily basis, we all need the immunity enhancing quality of Frankincense.
- Frankincense supports the production of white blood cells. Take 2 to 3 drops under the tongue twice daily, for depleted white blood count, drip and massage 2 drops of Frankincense with carrier oil along the spine and back of neck daily.
- Apply to temples for management of stress.
- Apply to the base of brain stem 2x daily to help with depression.
- Add Frankincense to Respire respiratory blend, massage on chest and throat for a persistent cough.
- Layer Frankincense over any essential oil to enhance that oils properties and drive the oils deeper. Think of Frankincense as a "kickin it up a notch" essential oil because it is and it DOES!
While this is a very short list of all the benefits of Frankincense essential oil, it's a good representation of just how broad and deep it's properties go. If I had one essential oil to depend on, Frankincense would be the one!

Printing this out for my Aunt as she should be getting her first bottle of Frankincense by Christmas.
The perfect gift!
Hi for gums did you mean swish for 20 seconds? You wrote 20 minutes. I don't think I could do that. Thanks for the great information.
It's 20 minutes - seems like a long time but, you get used to it and the benefits are so worth it :)
Try starting just before getting in the shower and then swishing while getting in and showering. I find the time passes quickly this way and if I need to spit some out (sometimes mouth gets full as saliva accumulates) its easy too. Don't worry if it takes a few days to build to the 20min either. It's ok to start with 10 then 15 and so on if that's the way it works for you. 20min is ideal but less time is also a benefit.
Frankincense is my favorite "go to" EO. Looking forward to getting my free bottle as part of "The Gift" Good post!
Wow, Good blog post today. Printing out info.
Thank you Rebecca. :)
Getting my first bottle in the mail today. :)
My daughter and I just love Frankincense. All her life she's struggled with severe acne; taking antibiotics then using a popular commercial product. A few months ago I sent her a bottle of Frankincense. She started using it 'neat' on her face and within the first 3 days she noticed her acne was clearing up, even the welts. She's thrilled. I use it for my now-fading facial sun spots and a whole host of other uses.
Thanks for a great post!
Thanks for this post. Is this safe to ingest while pregnant?
Ashlee, if you're using a pure Frankincense I believe it is but you of course should consult with your physician or midwife :)
I read on your sister, Dori's blog, that you told her to use 3 drops of this under her husband's tongue 2 x's a day for depression and it was helpful. I have been suffering with constant 24 hours a day head and face pain for 2 and 1/2 years which has destroyed my life. I am only 40, 3 children, a teacher...it has destroyed me. Nothing has helped the pain and the pain has gotten much worse. The constant pain has led to very bad depression and anxiety. I would like to try this if it would help as I have tried quite a few prescription medications and they don't do anything because I still have the head pain so my mood is not lifted. Thank you. I hope you get this. I just subscribed to your blog and am new to the oils. Have never used them.
I have come across so many incenses in that frank incense is my favorite one that too i buy it from liberty1947.
Michelle, I was curious if the frankincense has helped you. Any update or improvements?
