How to Get Started using Pure Essential Oils
Camp Wander Style
It's high time for a back to basics, how to get started with essential oils blog post. Every day, more people are turning to a holistic approach to life, we're just not satisfied with the level of care or the answers anymore. For those of you searching and embarking on a quest to learn more about pure essential oils and how to incorporate them in your everyday life, this is for you!
Essential Oil Lesson ~ the "Cliff Notes" version
There's nothing new about the medicinal use of plants. Our ancestors have used plants, seeds, wood and resins from nature to care for themselves and their families since the beginning of time. Happily, in more modern times we don't have to forage in the forest anymore because we're blessed with the convenience of a little glass bottle brimming with pure, healing essential oils.
Essential oils are 50 - 75% more powerful than the herb or plant itself, a little goes a long way.
There are those who believe that it's not safe to take essential oils internally no matter how pure they are, this actually has been the norm in the aromatherapy world for many years. However, we now have the ability to use essential oils medicinally/internally with more rigorous testing for purity. This level of quality is what I use personally and, what I write about. Whether you choose to use them topically or internally as the label allows - always seek high quality essential oils.
Essential oils are not a cure all but, you'll be surprised at just how many issues can be taken care of with high quality, pure essential oils.

I also suggest that you learn all you can about natural alternatives for healing such as pure essential oils because there will be times when you'll need to rely on your own resources. Emergency preparedness is everyone's responsibility.
Speaking from personal experience, I started using essential oils the day I bought a diffuser. Who doesn't love a fragrant home? When I learned that I could scent my home with something organic and purify the air we breathe, I was in!
My diffuser allowed immediate gratification, the freshness that billowed up was invigorating and I soon found I could suit my mood or improve it depending on what I put in the diffuser. It also helped me become more comfortable with my new oils by blending and mixing and learning what worked for me and what didn't. If you do nothing but diffuse, you can improve your health and your environment.
In case you didn't know, I'm a Spark Naturals essential oils convert because of their simple, affordable retail platform where no membership is required. Spark Naturals provides an opportunity for anyone to use pure essential oils without a membership fee or contract. Their Health & Wellness Kit is perfect for EO beginners! I recommend it as the best opportunity and bargain to get you started on your new journey into essential oil use. The well thought out combination of oils provides you with the most versatile pure essential oils and blends.

To get started I recommend a short list of essential oils that are the most versatile (there's no need to overwhelm you yet :) But trust me, once you start using oils everyday and enjoy the benefits of how they make you feel you'll soon wonder how you ever got through a day without them. Adding more oils to your natural pharmacy can quickly become a new obsession.

Thanks for the help. I am new to EOs, but very interested. I have been researching all sorts of oils and concerned about the variable quality and prices of different brands. This post has been very helpful!
Hello from a balmy upstate NY!! I am awaiting the delivery of my first starter kit and I do not currently have a diffuser. My question is can I use any oil warmer particularly one that uses a tealight to warm it?
Love all your posts, and love pure essential oils...started with DT back in March and have since switched to SN...love not having to deal with all the "rules" :) I use them for myself and my family and have had great results with everything from allergies (seasonal, cats, etc....), to eczema, headaches, general aches and pains.... Oh, the list just goes on and on!! Thank you and your sisters for all the helpful info!!! The world is a better place because of people like you!
Thank you for all the helpful information you post. I just recently started using EOs thanks to you and your sister Jillee. I started with the salve and EOs for dry skin and skin conditions. Smells great and makes your skin really soft. Next project is your dreamy sleep salve and salve for aches and headaches. I would love to use the diffuser but am not sure I can since I have cats? Do you have any recommendations on that? Thanks for all the great information!
Thank you! We love what we get to do everyday :)
Debbie, if you're using pure EOs and your diffuser is in an open room up away from where you cats can get to it, I believe you're safe to diffuse. To be cautious, I would refrain from diffusing citrus oils too often, cats are sensitive to them.
Yep, just make sure to put it in a few tablespoons of coconut/olive/almond/other oil so that it doesn't evaporate too quickly! 2-3 drops should be plenty for a tea light warmer. It's best if you leave it to sit in the oil for an hour or two (in a closed jar) before warming it so that it really soaks up the scent. :)
I just started getting into oils as well. Is there anything us "newbies" should know about storing our creations? I've been reading articles, blogs, and websites that say you should only store your recipes in glass, then I see recipes in plastic spray bottles and small plastic jars. What is the general rule of thumb? Thank you
Chris, I'm new to using EOs too and was wondering the exact same thing! There are a few recipes for balms, salves, insect repellents and cleaners that I want to make, but I'm not sure whether it's okay to put them in plastic containers (lip balm tubes, spray bottles, etc.). Maybe if the EOs are diluted enough, or if the mixture will be used up quickly, there's less need to use glass.
Hi Rebecca. I too am relatively new to essential oils. I started several weeks ago by purchasing a diffuser and a blend from your sister. Loved it. I then became fascinated with the idea of your Dreamy Sleep Salve. I purchased the oil blend and the beeswax from your sister. I had everything else. I made four (4)of the four (4) oz. jars. I kept one for trouble going to sleep. Gave one to my husband...he is a diabetic...and one to my Mom...she is a diabetic and suffers from insomnia. Gave the last one to my daughter-in-law who has trouble staying alseep and rough heels. I am so sad to report that my experience and the feedback I am receiving is negative. I can't tell it did anyting for me...my husband swears it keeps him up and down at night. My Mom just laughed and my daughter-in-law said she could tell no difference. I am sure I followed your instructions to the letter...it looked exactly like yours. I just don't know why it isn't working for either of us. Any ideas? Thanks, Pam
Well...without being part of the process I don't know if any steps were missed but I have a few questions. Did you blend your own Dream Blend or purchase from Spark Naturals? If you blended your own, did you use Spark Naturals EOs, any substitutions?
Next question is application. Did you apply liberally? Entire foot, between and under toes etc? If not, you might want to try this.
How we react to EOs is a different experience for everyone that's why it's important not to give up and try different variations if need be. I have a friend that didn't think Dream Salve worked for her either until, one night she applied it AFTER she massaged her feet with magnesium gel and the combination worked like a charm. Keep learning and trying different combinations! Lavender and Marjoram is a good combination for many :)
Tea Light diffusers are designed to be used with water - not oils. The candle will warm the water so that the EOs do evaporate. It is a fire hazard to heat oils like olive oil over a candle!
Thanks so much, Rebecca. I purchased the Dream Blend from your sister at Spark Naturals and I used nothing except what your instructions called for.
No worries though, we'll keep trying. Maybe we were expecting miracles.:)
As for the issue of storing our recipes, any input on that question? I just made what I thought was a small lip balm recipe, and it turned out 9 small lip balm jars, .25oz, I bought from Bulk Apothecary. However, they are plastic. Is this ok to leave it in, as they contain peppermint oil? Thank you very much for your consideration.
I can't tell you how happy I am to have found your blog! I love it so much I refer to it daily on this new EO journey of ours, and have sent many friends your way as well!
I love my diffusers too! Sometimes that's the best way to end my hectic day! On a side note, I can no longer ask you any thing on your Facebook page. It tells me I'm blocked. I can see posts yet. Your thoughts on how to fix it? Have a great day and thanks for ALL the information on EO's. I've learned so much!
Thanks for all the information you and your sisters give everyone. I have made some of your salves and I just love them. I gave the dream salve to friends and family and they all love it and would like some more!! I will be making more in the next couple of weeks and thank you again I just love your blog :)
Hi Rebecca. Your search bar seems to be inoperative. Is there an index of all your blog posts? Thanks! -Mary
Hi Rebecca,
Are you still selling do terra or have you switched? Just curious as to why you've switched, if indeed you have. Also do you have an "about you page" or am I overlooking it?
Thanks a bunch!
Sena
Rebecca, I asked a question on the 5th, and again on the 6th, and now the 7th. Maybe you don't go back to previous blogs after a couple days to reply? I guess I'll just try to do a little more research on my own, but every site offers something different in what info they give you. I wanted info from a trustworthy source!
Chris, I appreciate the scolding....so sorry, with the new website pending and all that it involves things are falling thru the cracks!
I'm a purist, I believe products that contain EOs and will come in contact with the skin should be in glass. I know there are "approved" plastic containers (PET) but I prefer glass :)
Sena, I no longer use dT EOs, I prefer Spark Naturals for their high quality EOs and their simple retail approach rather than a network marketing platform. The blog is in flux right now as Im very close to launching a new website - so please be patient, it'll be worth it :)
Ok so Spark is not one that has independent sellers? You just online or in stores? In other words you do not sell spark?
buy* (I was thinking about signing up as a consultant for do terra, that's why I was wondering. I've read some great things about do terra and some things that concern me.)
Spark has an affiliate program available which is simply making a commission on any products purchased using your Affiliate code. The benefit of using someone's Affiliate code is an additional 10% off any product, anytime. Which makes it a Win/Win for both consumer and Affiliate. No ranks, no team building, no monthly requirements, no hoops to jump through - simple and fair for everyone.
Thanks so much for the info. But how do you sign up as an affiliate? I didn't see anything on their site about it.
Hi Rebecca!
I'm doing some research for my parents, hope you can help me out. My (diabetic) dad has just been told by his cardiologist that he cannot take regular, over the counter drugs when he is sick-two bouts of bronchitis and to trips to the hospital due to an elevated heart rate. I've mentioned that they might want to look into essential oils and see how they can help him stay healthy. I know I'm not giving you a lot to go on, but can you give any suggestions?
The key then is prevention! Diet, exercise, hydration and sunshine to keep his immunity strong. It might not be a bad idea for him to roll Shield on his feet morning and night as well. If he does get sick, natural remedies with pure EOs :)
I made your naked salve for the first time today! It's a little oily..is that the way it should be? Can I add more beeswax to make it less oily? Thanks and love your site! !
If you mean more solid, yes! Just add a little more beeswax next time :)
No one I know in person uses EO's... and I need help with super basic stuff. Like how to get the top off the rollerball bottle I bought without misshaping the darn thing. Or why my EO's from SN don't drip one at a time when I turn them over- they dripdripdrip so fast I can hardly count the drops. I need a mentor. lol. Any suggestions? a book? a website?
Stick with me, I'll help you :) Come over to facebook, there's lots of information there too! You might want to invest in a few glass eye droppers to put on your EO bottles, they're great!
I wish I understood how to use this site wanted to post one of the massage oil recipes That will be featured on my website.
