Designer Solar Jars with Removable Lid for Filling!

I hope everyone had a great Memorial weekend!  We did, and as always...it was much to short!

I want to share a very quick project that worked out great this weekend and, is so simple!  All it takes is a preserves jar...in this case, Leifheit 2 Cup jars from Amazon ($16 for 6) and a solar light from Ace Hardware ($1.99).  No glue, no paint, no craft supplies of any sort are needed!

Simply remove the shaft and plastic shade of the solar stick.  Push the round solar panel up through the ring of the jar lid.  The jar lid is equivalent to the size of a wide mouth mason jar.  This will be a very snug fit, no need to glue anything!  Next, twist the ring back onto the jar.  You may have to muscle this part a bit but it can be done!

And now you have a portable and pretty solar light.

I've thought of so many uses for them!  But...

BEST OF ALL???

You can take the lid off and, customize the jar by filling with flowers, sea shells, pebbles, candy, cranberries at Christmas time, candy corn on Halloween etc. etc.!  Change them out to suit the occasion!

Parties, BBQ and weddings
Centerpieces
Camping:  for the table and the tent
Camper trailers
Night lights
Luminaries for the driveway or garden path
Porch lights
In the car
Great gifts: weddings, bridal showers, birthdays, housewarming gifts

Candles are nice, but not always sensible.  Solar jars can't be blown out by the wind and they're just more user friendly!

That's all there is to it, simple design with so many options!  Let me know what new uses you come up with...can't wait to hear about them!

Hi- Great idea! Can you post a picture of the inside of the lid where you attached the solar light part? Having a bit of trouble visualizing that. Thanks

Sharon, just push the solar disk (what's left after removing shaft and plastic shade ) UP thru the ring of the jar's two piece sealing lid, you will only be using the ring...not the flat lid.

I love love LOVE this idea! So much, in fact, that I had to make some! I had trouble finding solar lights that would fit, but I did find an Ace Hardware nearby (never knew it was even there!) and found the same ones you used. But let me tell you, you got a heck of a deal at $1.99! I had to pay $4.99 each! But I wanted them bad enough, so I paid that for them *grumble*. Anyway, I used quart sized jars and filled them with those little colored marble things that you can get in the floral dept (dollar store) and I left the little globe part on, so when it lights up, it shows up through the marbles around it. I just bought a new patio table and plan to put 4 of them on the table around my umbrella pole. I can't wait til it's dark tonight to see it! Thanks so much for the idea!

How long do the solar lights last?

All I can say is, a long time! I have 4 yr old solar lights and I've only replaced the batteries once.

I love this idea! Gonna try it this week to put on my deck and patio table. I have a TON of canning jars - might start out with a wide mouth quart. Love the marble idea - that should also make them really stable.
Thanks for all your wonderful ideas.

I made some of these using regular Mason jars, they are cheaper at Walmart or Ace. Mine were too small to fit like yours do but we cut the lid and glued them to it. I like yours, very nice.

Can you tell me how the solar recharges ? as in where the panel is exposed to the sun light ?

Thank you
