Essential Oils: How Much? How Often?

When I was new to essential oils, I'm the first to admit I was intimidated.

Thankfully, I soon learned that there was nothing to be afraid of, because there isn't a "wrong" way to use essential oils (caveat: don't drip them in your eyes or ears please!).  I found that I was so tuned in to the mindset of "harmful side effects" from my lifelong experience with traditional medicine that it took some effort to shake free from that.

As I stepped into this new (new to me) approach to wellness I knew there would be a learning curve and it would be up to me to do my homework.  Kudos to doTERRA for their excellent resources but even so... two questions were always flying out of my mouth!  How much?  How often?  Trust me, once you get the hang of this...everything will click and you'll be the healer in your home in no time, so here we go!

If you learn nothing else from this blog post, remember this: When it comes to pure essential oils, don't assume that more is always better.  Sometimes it's true but here's the thing about essential oils....

if you want optimal results, practice consistency, research supports this recommendation.

Finding the right dose will depend on the individual.  Experts (like Dr. David Hill) recommend that smaller doses be applied and then observed.  How is the body reacting?  Are there positive results?  Adjustments to dose and frequency can then be made, no worries!  Truly, it's such a relief AND a pleasure to know that I'm practicing safe and sane wellness in my home.

  • Adults ~ start with 2 to 3 drops massaged into each foot or on the area of concern.  Because these oils are safe and pure, you can always apply more oils after 15 minutes if needed.
  • Adults ~ can also ingest pure essential oils by capsule if preferred.  Start with 3 to 4 drops.  You can repeat the dose 15 minutes later if needed.
  • For chronic or stubborn virus infection, apply or ingest oils every 2 hours for 3 to 4 days after symptoms completely disappear.

It's always a good idea to stay hydrated when when using essential oils.   Drink lots of water with 3 to 4 drops of Lemon essential to help move toxins out of the body.

Rule of Thumb:  Optimizing therapeutic benefits is best achieved by using smaller amounts and applying more frequently.

Note:  When treating children always cut the dose in half and dilute with a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil or any vegetable based oil.

Applying and massaging into little feet is an excellent application method for kids.

doTERRA CPTG (Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade) essential oils are powerfully potent with diverse chemistry.  Because of their purity, our bodies respond beautifully as our biochemistry is similar.  For this reason, I use doTERRA essential oils.

I hope this information helps to give you some boundaries to lean on in times of consternation.  You're doing great, keep up the good work!

  1. Got my Family Physician Kit at just the right time. The oldest has a runny nose, cough and headache. Last night we did On Guard and Oregano on his feet and tonight we used Frankincense and On Guard on his feet, but diluted with some coconut oil. I'm glad to see I can do this more often. He loves having his feet rubbed. Hope it doesn't turn into anything worse.

    1. Andrea, if that virus digs in it's heels...apply Oregano every 2 hrs to his feet. Keep applying or taking in capsule cold/flu bombs: 3 drops ea of Oregano, On Guard and Melaleuca every 3 to 4 hrs. The extra Oregano application works fantastic when the virus is a stubborn one!

    2. I can attest to this fantastic remedy! We all did our round of colds and while I took everything internally I rubbed it on the bottom of my children's feet. Oregano is the bomb when something digs in! There have been so many out sick at my kid's school I bathe their feet regularly in OnGuard! Praise God we've been spared the flu! I also keep OnGuard diffusing in my house constantly! I feel like this season has been so bad you can't be too careful!

    1. Michele ~ you'd be surprised how much doTerra Oils actually save you. Although the cost up front does seem to be quite a bit ~ per drop is very inexpensive compared to gas to doctor's visit, co pay, cost of prescription, gas home and this doesn't even begin to calculate that fact that you are actually using something that heals as opposed to masking the symptoms. Most "drops" are pennies and you usually only need 2-3 per application.

We've found we are replacing our medicine cabinet as well. SMELLING Peppermint usually takes care of our headaches and there is not cost to smell :-).

Hope this helps. You can't go wrong joining this team. They will have so many resources and great advice, you'll feel like family really soon.

  4. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us Rebecca, I've had sick kids this last week and have been treating with doTERRA On Guard. The diffuser with the essential oils is a blessing too! I'll have to check my box to see if I have Oregano, if not I'll be shopping =)

For Michele, if you buy one or two oils as you can in small sizes if you can you'll build a supply. It's worth it!

    1. Good advice everyone, the price point can cause an initial GASP but researching their effectiveness quickly helps one to understand their value.

  5. Also, what you get in the physicians kit are smaller bottles, great way to sample then when you order 15 ml seem huge and last forever!
But if you only want to start with a few, try lavendar, lemon and pepermint. Buy 5ml bottles. And my trick, I bought stopper lids from aroma tools (aromatools.com) (like 2.50 for 6) and I find I can regulate the drops much better!!! Plus its just all around easier! I'm soaking in a detox bath right now, and just took a capsule loaded with lav, lem, pep and oregano...be gone cold!

  6. Like a few have mentioned, the cost can be intimidating. You mentioned it comes out to only pennies a drop. Since every combo mentioned usually takes several drops of each oil, is there an approximate "number of drops per container" so I could judge how long each bottle would normally last for all the different things I would like to make/use?
Thanks for taking the time to "school" us on your vast knowledge of essential oils.

    2. Melissa, I'll also add that if using an eye dropper, the 15ml bottle has approx. 285 drops.
