Back to School With Essential Oils!

So much for the carefree days of summer!  Back to the tired and grumpy mornings, lots of homework and exposure to sick kids and nasty viruses.  Guess what?  Essential oils can make all the difference this year!

Hello Lavender Candidate :)

What parent wouldn't like to know how to promote better focus, retention, happy mornings and relaxed evenings?  And, just as important, how to keep your kids well and resistant to all the viruses and bacteria that congregate in schools.  This goes for anybody going back to school...college students included!

By now, most of you know I love doTERRA essential oils.  When I talk about EOs and EO blends, understand that they're available only from doTERRA.

At the risk of repeating myself, I rely on them for their purity.  doTERRA oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade which means their efficacy is phenomenal!

Let's start by dissecting the school day, shall we?

** MORNING Routine **

This idea is pure genius.  When you're trying to roust your kids out of bed to get ready for school.  Bring along a pretty little spray bottle of:

Wild Orange & Lavender
w/ water and a touch of rubbing alcohol for emulsifying.  Spray a fine mist into the bedroom to awaken their senses!  (Please refrain from the "stream" setting, fine mist ONLY) hehe...

IMPORTANT!  If you're fighting sickness or there's a bug making the rounds at school, make sure to put a drop of On Guard on your kids feet before they leave the house!  Why the feet?  The bottoms of your feet have the largest pores, essentials oils can penetrate the bloodstream quickly via the feet.

On Guard is a blend of immunity boosting oils:  Wild Orange, Clove, Eucalyptus, Cinnamon and Rosemary.  On Guard wards off colds and flu, it's absolutely critical for every household in my book.  My entire family uses it and doctor visits are almost non-existent during the school year!  It can be applied topically, ingested or diffused.  When we're exposed to someone with cold or flu, we diffuse On Guard and always apply to our feet.  I can't recommend this product enough, it's saved my family from missed school and work, not to mention the savings in doctor visits and prescriptions!

ADD & ADHD

I hesitate to present tips for those of you with ADD and ADHD kids, only because there's SO much information!  A blog post all it's own.  But I will say, there is help in EOs.  I'll go ahead and give you a sample of ideas to help your child focus during the day and if interested, I'll go into more depth in another post.

Two EOs that have been very effective with ADD and ADHD are Vetiver and Peppermint.  Vetiver is grounding and Peppermint improves focus.  This aid by the way is effective for adults too.

Purchase small glass roll-on bottles.  AromaTools has them and many other products for use with EOs.

Add 3 drops each of Vetiver and Peppermint, fill to the top with Fractionated Coconut Oil or other vegetable based oil.  I prefer coconut oil as it's antibacterial and antifungal.  Roll it on your child's wrists and the base of the neck (back) in the morning.  Tell your child to sniff his/her wrist during the day, it will help center your child when unable to sit still and focus (same for adults).

Whew!  Are you still with me??  This is a long winded post!

** AFTERNOON Routine**

Things should be pretty calm during this time of day, the kids are in school.  However, here's a few ideas...

Ugh...lousy photo!
For stay at home Mom's, shortly before school gets out  you may want to start diffusing various oils depending on the situation you're dealing with.  If you're fighting sickness, diffuse On Guard.  If your routine is to get homework done first thing, diffuse some Peppermint or Wild Orange to keep their minds stimulated and alert.  If they've had a bad day, Lavender works wonders to calm and relax (I love Lavender).  My favorite combo to diffuse is Lavender and Bergamot.  Yes, you can mix EOs in the diffuser!

The diffuser of choice in my home is sold by doTERRA, it's called the Lotus.  You can buy diffusers online too.  Diffusers emit a fine mist of the EOs with water, fine enough to be inhaled.  I highly recommend having one in your home!  I have two, so that I can diffuse in kids rooms at night if needed.  This is my diffuser at my desk, hard at work making me brilliant, resilient and...obnoxious?  *grin*

** NIGHT-TIME Routine **

One word:  Lavender!  Diffuse it, spray it on linens but by all means, put a drop or two on your kids feet before bedtime.  Babies benefit from this too!  However, be sure to dilute with coconut oil when using EOs on babies.  Adults reap the benefits as well!  Once again, if warding off illness, you can layer On Guard and then Lavender on feet.

I will go so far as to "promise" you that if you bring Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils into your home you will wonder how you ever got by without them! Yes, they are a little pricey but consider this.

EOs are HIGHLY concentrated and a drop or two is all that's needed for most any use.  Keep in mind that essential oils are all of these: medicinal, cleaning agents, aromatherapy tools, disinfectants, purifiers, pain relievers, mood enhancers all wrapped up in a small brown bottle.

This is a lot of information and, it's natural to feel overwhelmed in the beginning but, there's no time like the present!  Okay, I'll let you get back to your life now :)

Nothing worthwhile is ever easy...but your family's worth it.

  6. hello,

love your posts.. just wanted to share what I have learned .. lavender is NOT good for boys ! esp. babies , but I would keep it away from all boys ( men) . it does something to their hormones . My niece said her dr even told her to not use ANY lavender on or around her baby boy..
just thought I would pass that on.

    God Bless,
    Lisalynn

    2. I would have to strongly agree with Rebecca and disagree with Lisalynn. Lavender is one of my sons favorite oils and mine. I use it everyday on all my children and have since they were infants. Are you using doTERRA's Lavender Essential Oil? doTERRA's are the only oils that are CTPG, Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade. The purest oil out there, with no fillers or contaminates. Make sure you are not using a Lavender that says keep away from Children and do not take internally, it may say 100% Pure but read the whole label. How can it be pure if you can't take it internally and it says to keep away from Children. With doTERRa you can take internally and it has so many great uses for children, for all of us. If the child responds well to the oil then there body is telling you it needs it. It the child does not like it, they don't need it. Listen to your body and your instinct you will know. It is all natural. I would advise to do more research. Also very few Dr. know much about Essential Oils so they advise against them.

  8. Great article! Is there a more recent option for ADD children? Recently I heard of one called InTune that was supposed to be made for children with ADD. What do you know about that one?

  9. What size roller bottle did you use for the vetiver/peppermint blend? I would like to make one up for a friend to try until she can afford Jeddy's blend. Thank you for all your wonderful info.
