EOs: How Much? How Often?

When I was new to essential oils, I'm the first to admit I was intimidated!

Thankfully, I soon learned that there was nothing to be afraid of, because there isn't a "wrong" way to use EOs (caveat: don't drip them in your eyes or ears please!).  I was so tuned in to the mindset of "harmful side effects" from my lifelong experience with traditional medicine that it took some effort to shake free from that.

My EO Journal ~ courtesy of Smash Book!

As I stepped into this (new to me) approach to wellness I knew there would be a learning curve and it would be up to me to do my homework.  Two questions were always flying out of my mouth!  How much?  How often?  Trust me, once you get the hang of this...everything will click and you'll be the healer in your home in no time, so here we go!

The Feet!  Your body's largest pores ~ great area for topical application.

If you learn nothing else from this blog post, remember this: When it comes to pure essential oils, don't assume that more is always better.  Sometimes it's true but here's the thing about essential oils....

If you want optimal results, practice consistency, research supports this recommendation.

Finding the right dose will depend on the individual.  Experts recommend that smaller doses be applied and then observed.  How is the body reacting?  Are there positive results? Adjustments to dose and frequency can then be made, no worries!  Truly, it's such a relief AND a pleasure to know that I'm practicing safe and sane wellness in my home.

Suboccipital Triangle or:  Base of Brain Stem for Topical Application

  • Adults ~ start with 2 to 3 drops massaged into each foot or on the area of concern.  Because these oils are safe and pure, you can always apply more oils after 15 minutes if needed.
  • Adults ~ can also ingest pure essential oils by capsule if preferred.  Start with 3 to 4 drops.  You can repeat the dose 15 minutes later if needed.
  • For chronic or stubborn virus infection, apply or ingest oils every 2 hours for 3 to 4 days after symptoms completely disappear.

It's always a good idea to stay hydrated when when using essential oils.   Drink lots of water with 3 to 4 drops of Lemon essential to help move toxins out of the body.

Rule of Thumb:  Optimizing therapeutic benefits is best achieved by using smaller amounts and applying more frequently.

Note:  When treating children always cut the dose in half and dilute with a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil (FCO) or any vegetable based oil.

Applying and massaging into little feet is an excellent application method for kids.

Spark Naturals PURE therapeutic grade essential oils are powerfully potent with diverse chemistry.  Because of their purity, our bodies respond beautifully to them most of the time as our biochemistry is similar.  For this reason, I only use and recommend PURE EOs.

I hope this information helps to give you some boundaries to lean on in times of consternation.  You're doing great, keep up the good work!

Are there any oils that are NOT recommended for children? I started using Jeddy's Blend on my son, and it's been amazing to help him calm down when he is overstimulated, and I am anxious to explore more EOs and homeopathic remedies- but I too sometimes feel like I'm stick in the modern medicine mentality! Thanks, in advance :)

I'm fairly new to EO's and wondering if Jeddy's Blend would be helpful for a teen who just doesn't naturally fall asleep until 11pm at the earliest. I think it's partly the teen body clock that wants to stay awake late and sleep later in the morning which just isn't possible in public school. I do have some Lavendar. Would that something to try first?

No Heidi, PURE EOs don't always need to be diluted. Hot ones like Oregano and Cinnamon should be diluted however.

I always refer to PURE EOs of course...but, used wisely and diluted properly EOs are safe for children too. Follow the usage on the labels and never drip EOs in eyes or ears :)

Jaun, Im a little more liberal with Jeddys because it already has some carrier oil in it. I suggest putting in a roller bottle and rolling it all over the bottoms of his feet and under his toes each morning. You can reapply as needed, like afterschool :)

Give Lavender a try, yes! If that's not working...let me know, I have other options :)

Hi Rebecca!
My sensitive skin reacted with a horrible rash after applying Dream on my chest? Any suggestion on what I may apply to heal? Also should I dilute some FCO with it next time?
Thanks in advance!

doTerra has a wonderful relaxing for sleep oil called Serenity. It has lavender in it. I think RMO and Spark Naturals also have something like it. Serenity works for me, though.

It's probably the cinnamon - you only need a couple of drops in the whole (small) bottle because it's strong. Try lavender for healing.
I diluted Dream with fractionated coconut oil and it still smells strongly of cinnamon, but I like it.

So do I put just a few drops of lavender on the rash "neat"?

Thanks !

That should work, but since you have sensitive skin (and to make your lavender last longer), you can dilute it. I put it in a roller bottle with some FCO and it just rolls on easily and then you gently rub it in. Dr. Hill (doTerra's doctor) says that if you don't massage the oils in, you lose up to 80% from evaporation. (Rebecca - not trying to take over here -- just wanting to help a fellow EO user. I won't be offended if you delete me.)

Rebecca- i recently read a book from a co worker about EOs. the book was very good and had a good way of explaining EOs and what they do....BUT in the book she stated that if you use an "oil" meaning FCO or EVOO as a carrier oil the EOs do not soak into the skin they just stay on top and you receive the benefits aromatically. can you help me understand this more? because i use FCO in many of my things and I still "feel" like i am benefiting from the oils soaking into my skin? Help

Danielle, that's news to me. I wonder, was this book written recently?

I don't know about the other carrier oils, but coconut oil absorbs quickly into the skin just like other pure EOs, so this would not be the case as stated in this book...it only helps to dilute the oil without affecting how it is absorbed into the body...

I see that sometimes on your site your refer to doTERRA EO and then sometime Spark Natural's. Is one better than the other? I am really interested in learning more about EO, but I want to make sure I am buying good quality.

Patricia, once upon a time I promoted dT because they were my favored EO until that is, SN came along. My preference lies with them because of their high quality PURE EOs and the fact that SN isn't a multi-level business. I have a lot of old blog posts to update yet!

In ALL my studies it is actually quite opposite of that. If you have ever taken the "blot" test, you would quickly see that essential oils evaporate very quickly. If you are using essential oils neat imagine how much of it is evaporating before being able to soak into your skin. If you use a carrier oil that absorbs quickly then the essential oils cannot evaporate because they are stuck in the carrier oil. This way you need to use less essential oils and can save money. I never recommend using ANY essential oils neat because of this.

thanks for your responses ladies. I felt as though i was still benefiting so it baffled me. I will continue on as usual and use the FCO

Rebecca, can I use the nutiva coconut oil to mix with my Zen blend? I know it is thicker but would it still work in a little pot and put on more like a salve? Just curious. I haven't invested in the fractionated coconut oil yet. Should I be diluting all of my oils with FCO? I am very new to EO's.

At September 5, 2013 at 10:45 PM , Blogger Rebecca said...

You can absolutely use Nutiva as a carrier oil! Apply a little on your palm, add your EOs and massage in. Diluting all of your EOs all the time isn't always necessary but it never hurts either :)

Hey I am new to essential oils and am so nervous to jump in and start! I am pregnant and deal with bad depression and anxiety. I really want to find something other than medications that hurt my system send my hormones everywhere and stop working after a few months. I have heard essential oils do wonders. Any advice or types to try?

Hi Rebecca! I have 2 questions-one, is fractionated coconut oil always in a liquid form? and 2, are Spark's oils considered "organic"? I have a friend who is leery due to pesticides. I emailed Spark and they did not respond. I figure Certified Pure is Organic in E.O. lingo? You just don't hear essential oils being called organic.
Thanks! Jenni

Please don't be nervous about using EOs, your body will be so responsive to them. Agreed, there is much to learn but nothing to fear :)

A great start for you would be SN's 4 pack of Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint and Melaleuca as well as Zen, which is a grounding blend. If you're pregnant and dealing with depression, I would suggest adding a 50/50 blend of Zen and fractionated coconut oil to a roll on bottle and applying to the bottoms of your feet first thing every morning for a more centered day. You can reapply as needed during the day, I like to apply the blend to the base of the stem and on my wrists so I can breathe it in during the day.

You might want to look into a diffuser as well. Diffusing ZEN with a little citrus like Lemon, Wild Orange or Bergamot is WONDERFUL.

I don't want to overwhelm you...but this would be a nice start :) P.S. Spark has roller bottles and diffusers should you want to try them!

Hi Jennifer! Yes, FCO is always in liquid form because it's had the fat spun out of it.

Interestingly enough, SN's EOs are better than organic. Because all their EOs undergo MS/GS testing, they're certified to be clear of any pesticides, fungus or any other synthetics or disease.
