Whipped Coconut Oil Cleanser with EOs

~ Grace For Your Face ~

If you didn't get the memo, coconut oil is no longer the bad guy.  It's been cleared of all wrong doing and deemed healthy by the scientific community.  As many of us already know, there are SO many ways to use it, eat it...and even blog about it :)

One of my absolute favorite uses of coconut oil is for my face. Every night, I wash my face with organic extra virgin cold pressed coconut oil + a few other goodies that we'll get to shortly!

Google {Oil Cleanse} and you will see that it's not a new idea. Although it's not the norm, I prefer organic coconut oil because of it's antimicrobial and anti-toxin properties. Virgin coconut oil does not clog your pores!  If you have toxins below the surface, coconut oil will purge them in a matter of a few days to a few weeks.

If you're prone to break outs, coconut oil is great.  It will open up the pores and release built up toxins that have accumulated from various skin products, dirt, trapped oil etc. There is a possibility that during the detox period you could suffer a breakout resulting from the toxins being pushed up to the surface but it will subside once the pores are cleansed.  Believe it or not, this protocol is excellent for the acne prone.

It was my sister, who introduced me to this new method last year when she blogged about Oil Cleansing.

Since then, I've had time to tweak the ingredients a bit...including the main one, coconut oil.  I appreciate our.  In short, oil pulls/cleanses oil from pores. Who knew??

Simple Basic Recipe

*1  1/2  Cups Organic Coconut Oil
1  Tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil

On a warm day, I let the coconut oil soften in the sun for a few minutes so I can get a smooth consistency when mixing in the olive oil and EOs.  It's not entirely necessary, but if I have the time, I take this extra step.

A Few Handy Tips
_______________________________

To get the smooth consistency, I use a hand mixer.  The cleanser will harden slightly after it completely cools down if the temp in your home is under 76 degrees.  A plastic canning jar is my container of choice, it's air tight and non-breakable.

Remember, a little goes a long way, so a single batch will last quite a long time.

To enhance the coconut oil cleanser I like to add EOs for my dry skin:
Lavender, Geranium, Ylang Ylang and Frankincense.  3 drops of each for a single batch.

Part of the beauty of this recipe is the ability to customize it with essential oils that are suitable for your skin type!

When washing your face with oil, it's important to use a washcloth and hot water, as hot as you can handle it.  Spread approximately 1 teaspoon of cleanser evenly over your face.  Take a hot wash cloth and hold it against your face, moving it, pressing it...steaming your face.  Rinse the wash cloth and repeat two more times.  This will ensure your pores will open up and let the coconut and accompanying oils get to the toxins.

If you're just getting started with essential oils, start simple with Lavender only.  If you're prone to breakouts, add some Melaleuca along with the Lavender!  Consider yourself a modern apothecary, creating beautiful products for your skin from pure ingredients!

Don't be afraid to experiment...make it your own!

Do you remove your make up first? Or is this your make up remover? Thanks!

Rebecca, I have been doing this for a few years now and it's wonderful!!! After living in a house of toxic mold I couldn't use anything on my skin, even water hurt my rash. My Environmental Doctor had me do this and it has been a blessing. My rash is almost gone and my skin looks like it did when I was younger. People can't believe I'm 50.

The truth is oil cleans oil. If you have greasy build up in the kitchen nothing cleans it better than oil. This also has cleared my son's acne up, added tea tree and he now has wonderful skin..

Love what you're doing, keep up the great work!!!!

My coconut oil has little chunky bits that won't easily dissolve. I bought it from the grocery store and it is organic - is it too old or is this normal?

There are so many different grades of coconut oil Jackie. Without seeing it or smelling it I can't make that call. Have you checked for an expiration date?

I haven't checked that, but I will, thanks. It has no scent at all, strangely enough.

We live in Nebraska and my coconut oil (kept in the kitchen for baking) turns to liquid in the Summer. We keep our house pretty comfortable but it must be just warm enough to make it liquid. How do you manage to keep your whipped coconut cleanser from turning to soup?

I have the opposite problem! Mine wants to be rock hard all time :) Whipping in the olive oil helps my case a little bit but it still hardens in cool temps. You may need to refrigerate in the summers - not very convenient though is it :-/

Oh my gosh!!! I just tried this, this is AMAZING. I used lavender and malaluca (since I don't have the others on hand). I NEVER thought of using a hand mixer to whip the coconut oil before. It is SO smooth and creamy now.

Thank you for this post!!! Doing this FOREVER!

So do you use the olive oil to help soften it? I live in Texas and mine is usually melted or soft. What might you suggest besides Ylang Ylang? Thank you so anxious to try it!

I had just made this with Aroma touch when I read this post. I used it as a cleanser and GOODNESS!!! This makes my skin feel amazingly soft! Love love love!

Do you wash off makeup first or do this with it on? Also do you use a toner or moisturizer after?

Laura, this will do a great job of getting the makeup off!

Leslie just omit the Ylang Ylang, it's fine. The olive oil helps out by making the whipped cleanser creamy. If your home is under 76 degrees, it should hold up fine...but you might have to experiment a little with it.

I have oily skin, what eos would you recommend for that? I noticed you said this was for dry skin. Thanks a ton!

You could add Melaleuca and Lavender :)

mine has little bits like that too, but once you put it on your skin, or between your hands, it melts super fast.

I just made a batch, and here are my variations :

1 1/2 c coconut oil
1/2 tbsp olive oil
1/2 tbsp sweet almond oil
3 capsules vitamin E
essential oils : lavender, lemon, orange, rosemary, ylang ylang and 1 or 2 drops peppermint.

I find this also makes an incredible body moisturizer, not just a facial cleanser. I have yet to try it out on my face!

Are those homemade face towels? What type of yarn do you use?

I used some of this the other night after waxing (hot wax) and it was amazing for an after wax treatment. Helped to get any of the left over wax off too. I'm still just using it as a moisturizer. I have little bits of coconut oil that didn't dissolve, am going to heat it up and let it cool & harden again, see if that takes care of it. I may add some more vitamin E oil to it and whip it some more too.

I add salt once a week for a fantastic exfoliator. I have been using coconut oil for years. It is also great mosquito repellent and tanning oil. So be sure to use SPF to protect your skin from burns and melanoma!

Hello Rebecca,

Should I wash my face after doing this with a regular facial cleanser or just finish it off by splashing cold water?

Thanks!

Katrina, I like to follow my routine with an alcohol free witch hazel toner. No need to re-wash with a facial cleanser, you can certainly rinse with a cold splash if you like :)

Hi!

I just made mine and after sitting in the container for hours, it stayed in its liquid form and there are no signs that it will harden up again. Will it still be as effective even if it stays that way? Or should I keep it in the fridge?

Many thanks!

Karla

If your house is warm, the coconut oil will stay in liquid form. It will work just fine as a liquid, you could keep it in a glass pump bottle if that's the case :)

Hi jbkidsco! Go to camp wonder on line and read her articles about what EO's to use for aging skin :D I have learned a lot reading her articles and also try Jenni Raintree :D Good luck!

Thank you Rebecca for this! I have been doing this routine for about two weeks now followed by bi-carb and water solution to close my pores and I can see that my face is starting to clear up. I have already given up my over the counter facial creams and I really feel happy that I have now chosen to go natural! :-)

We are crazy about coconut oil here & share all our uses for it with anyone who will listen. They usually look at me like I am crazy, but then tell me how amazing my skin looks. Nice to find some fellow coconut lovers! We haven't used shampoo in 6 months either, just water & baking soda with a drop or 2 of tea tree oil or which ever EO you prefer (concentrate on the scalp) & rinse. For longer hair you will want to treat the ends with a rinse of equal parts water & apple cider vinegar to soften & balance Ph, and rinse it out. :)

I am wondering where everyone gets their Coconut Oil from, we live in a very rural area and finding stuff like this can be hard.

Jackie, I realize it's a bit of a late reply, but that happens to coconut oil if it's been allowed to partially melt and resolidify. It was probably not kept at a constant enough temperature in the grocery store, but it doesn't ruin the oil at all. If you want to get rid of those harder bits, melt it entirely on a water bath, then allow to cool. You can stir it some as it begins to solidify. Problem solved!

So I just found out that I am allergic to dogs and I have a 7 month old puppy and get hives on my face. Do you know if this will help my face or if there is something extra that I can put in it to help with my hives. My face is SUPER sensative to anything including just washing it with just water. Any suggestions I am desperate! !!

At December 23, 2013 at 8:26 AM , Blogger Lilith said...

My advice - see an allergy specialist or just your doctor, consider getting rid of the puppy. There isn't really a cosmetic solution to being allergic, although you might be able to get antihistamine pills or salve that would help. Question that you want to ask yourself is whether you want to live with the problem for the next 15-20 years, long and well may the puppy live.

Danielle, my nephew takes the LLP protocol everyday and is able to be around animals now. Lemon, Lavender and Peppermint combined is a natural antihistamine and something you might want to try. He takes 3 drops each in a capsule 2 to 3x daily.

I just started this and I think it's breaking my skin out...I know you stated that it's normal for that to happen temporarily but do you know how long it usually lasts? Thanks so much :)

Rachel if your skin feels like it needs more moisture, you can certainly add that to your routine. I have dry skin so I follow the oil cleanse with a serum (Ultimate Serum), it's a little lighter than a moisturizer and is a perfect combination for my skin.
