A Coconut Oil Cleanse.
A Coconut Oil Cleanse.
If you didn't get the memo, coconut oil is no longer the bad guy. It's been cleared of all wrong doing and deemed healthy by the scientific community. As many of us already know, there are SO many ways to use it, eat it...and even blog about it :)
One of my absolute favorite uses of coconut oil is for my face. Every night, I wash my face with organic extra virgin cold pressed coconut oil + a few other goodies that we'll get to shortly!
Google {Oil Cleanse} and you will see that it's not a new idea. Although it's not the norm, I prefer organic coconut oil because of it's antimicrobial and anti-toxin properties. Virgin coconut oil does not clog your pores! If you have toxins below the surface, coconut oil will purge them in a matter of a few days to a few weeks.
If you're prone to break outs, coconut oil is fantastic! It will actually open up the pores and release the build up of toxins that accumulated over the years from various skin products, dirt, trapped oil etc. However, there is a possibility that during the detox period you could suffer a breakout resulting from the toxins being pushed up to the surface but it will subside once the pores are cleansed. Believe it or not, this protocol is excellent for acne sufferers.
It was my sister Jillee, who introduced me to this unconventional technique last year when she blogged about Oil Cleansing. Since then, I've had time to tweak the ingredients...including the main one, coconut oil. I appreciate the compatibility this oil holds with our bodies. In short, oil cleanses oil from pores. Who knew??
This is my tried and true method...
Recipe:
*1 1/2 Cups Organic Extra Virgin Cold Pressed Coconut Oil
1 Tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil
**doTERRA Essential Oils
*I highly recommend Nutiva, available at Costco, Amazon and other health food stores.
Catching some rays.
Actually, I'm letting the coconut oil soften in the warm sun for a few minutes so I can get a smooth consistency when mixing in the olive oil and essential oils. Not necessary, but if I have the time, I'll take this extra step.
LUSCIOUS!
This is the dreamy result after adding olive oil and my own concoction of rejuvenating essential oils. To get this smooth consistency, I use a hand mixer. The cleanser will harden slightly after it completely cools down.
Tip & Tricks
Remember, a little goes a long way, so a single batch will last quite a long time.
**My choice of doTERRA essential oils for my type skin {DRY} are:
Lavender, Geranium, Ylang Ylang and Frankincense. I use 3 drops of each for a single batch.
Part of the beauty of this recipe is the ability to customize it with essential oils that are suitable for your skin type! Have you any idea what people are paying for custom, natural skin products these days?
When washing your face this way, it's important to use a washcloth and hot water, as hot as you can handle it. Spread approximately 1 teaspoon of cleanser evenly over your face. Take a hot wash cloth and hold it against your face, moving it, pressing it...steaming your face. Rinse the wash cloth and repeat two more times. This will ensure your pores will open up and let the coconut and accompanying oils get to the toxins.
If you're just getting started with essential oils, start simple with Lavender only. If you're prone to breakouts, add some Melaleuca along with the Lavender! Consider yourself a modern apothecary, creating beautiful products for your skin from pure ingredients!
Don't be afraid to experiment...make it your own!

I have been oil cleansing for about 3 months. I use avacado, castor, and tea tree for myself (old, sun damaged) and for my daughters I use grapeseed, castor and tea tree. My 20 year old REFUSED to even try oil cleansing, she has always fought acne, finally I got her to cross over and she LOVES it! I started with coconut oil and then read where it wasn't comedigenic (I probably misspelled that!) so I started using the other ingredients. I want to try this so what kind of essentials would I need for older skin (I'm 40 and have some sun damage) and for teenagers with dry but prone to breakouts? Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteAutumn, for you I would use any of the oils I used in mine...my skins like yours. For your teenagers, lavender and melaleuca would be a good combo!
DeleteI use this oil cleasing method will castor and grapeseed.
DeleteI THINK sandalwood and geranium pure essential oils would be good . Sandalwood for sun damage , geranium for breakouts.
Sandalwood is pricey but worth it.
I started making make up remover wipes [inspired by Jillee] with coconut oil and lavender EO, and found they worked as a cleanser, toner AND moisturiser - fantastic! Have also used boxes of wipes as a barter for fresh eggs and and a supply of fresh-baked shortbread - long live Camp Wander and One Good Thing!
ReplyDeleteThanks Penny! One big happy family here :)
DeleteAny chance you would share your oil wipe recipe? I have really been struggling with my acne since using just coconut oil as a cleanser for the past few weeks. Not sure if I need to do something different with the type of oil-free foundation I use, but my face is a mess. :(
DeleteI've just been using the coconut oil, but now I'm trying this recipe. My skin is drying up like a raisin in my middle age years! :)
ReplyDeleteI have had oily skin my entire life with the accompanying acne. It has not gotten any better as I'm getting closer to 40. I have been using a grapeseed oil/caster oil/tea tree oil combo for the last 2 weeks. Not only have my blackheads decreased dramatically, but my skin is no longer oily -- even at mid day. It's like a miracle. Only wish I would have known about this in my teenage years -- could have possibly caused me a lot of angst, but I'm already having my 7 year old use it to get her in the habit.
ReplyDeleteGreat news! Thanks for sharing.
DeleteHow much of the essential oils do you add?
ReplyDeleteNever mind! I was just temporarily blind. I can't wait to try this oil cleansing method!
DeleteI made this over the weekend and I love it!My face feels soft and not oily. I've even taken it a step farther and used it to shave my legs, my legs feel so soft and silky. I wish I would have known about this years ago.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, me too! So happy you love it :)
DeleteCan you use expeller pressed coconut oil? Also, I absolutely love your blog !
ReplyDeleteFor the face cleanse
ReplyDeleteYou say you only use this at night...what do you use in the morning?
ReplyDeleteI have a question, I have been told that using Pure Olive Oil as opposed to Extra Virgin will eliminate some of the odor of the Olive Oil, do you think it will make a difference in the end creation?
ReplyDeleteNever heard that before, but you won't smell the EVOO in this recipe...you'll smell a combination of coconut oil and essential oils...mmmm :))
DeleteI'm in my late 20's with sensitive, combination (very oily forehead) skin. Any suggestions for oils I should use? I've heard great things about frankincense, but not sure if it's right for my skin? Also, would you recommend a different combination of the base/carrier oils than what you're using for your dry skin?
ReplyDeleteThe oil base is good, and you could change the essential oils to melaleuca (if prone to breakouts). Frankincense is ALWAYS good, no matter the skin type because it has regenerative properties.
DeleteThank you!
DeleteSorry if I missed this somewhere, but how do you store it, in the fridge or ? How long does it last? I mean, without going rancid or anything?
ReplyDeleteAnd finally, I must have heated my coconut oil a bit too much, it doesn't look creamy like yours. I mixed it with a hand blender and it's just all liquid oil. I guess I could put my jar into the fridge to firm it up a bit? Thanks!
Bridget, I keep my jar by the bathroom sink, no need to refrigerate. It sounds as if you warmed your CO up a little too much, and yes, just cool it down to harden :))
DeleteHi ya Rebecca, thanks for your face cleansing recipe! I made it for myself about 2 weeks ago, I've already noticed the benefit but have still to make it through the adjustment period ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm mid-30 and have really sensitive skin so I only used the lavendar essential oil to play it safe. As you had used 3 drops each of 4 eo's, I decided to use 9 drops of the lavendar eo.
I just wanted to check with you about quantity of eo drops per batch. What would be the maximum amount of drops? And is there a rule of thumb for facial products?
Many thanks,
Dee
I have used the EV Coconut oil after my bath to moisturize my skin and my face for a few years now. Would you recommend washing with this recipe and follow up with plain coconut oil to moisturize.. Or does this wash keep it moisturized without adding anything?
ReplyDeleteI have dry skin and live in a dry climate so I choose to moisturize after I cleanse...it would depend on your skin type if you need to apply moisturizer or not :))
DeleteHas anyone experimented with a different line of essential oils? I've been looking at the lavender and melaleuca oils and they seem pretty pricey. I know it only requires 3 drops of each, but the start up cost is looking at about $45-60 for just 2 bottles.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what country you live in, but here in Canada you can by Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca) in most grocery stores. Costco is my favorite place to buy it as you can purchase a large bottle for around $10.
DeleteYou get what you pay for. I'd only use therapeutic grade. The oils last long. Remember mixed with a carrier oil it goes a long way . I buy doTerra from Rebecca at Camp Wander.
DeleteBrenda is absolutely correct! Especially for skin care or any health care you need to make sure you are using high quality "pharma" grade oils otherwise it's just about scent and you may be putting chemicals on your skin. That said I have never seen EO at our Costco so they may very well have high grade oils. You don't want just craft quality if that helps. Many areas also have shops (health food, herbal shops, simply EO) that carry high grade oils in bulk and let you purchase in various quantities. Some even let you bring your own bottles and or make mixtures to your specs so you can get just the number of drops you want in the bottle you want or have them make the whole mixture for you using your recipe. It's worth asking around in your community.
DeleteHi Rebecca,
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting so many great recipes. I'm excited to try this one. I've read the previous thread and noticed that you said that you moisturized in addition to using this cleanser due to your dry climate. I live in Colorado with very dry air as well. What moisturizer do you use?
I use alternate between just a little bit of my anti aging healing salve and Dr. Hauschka's Rose Cream :)
DeleteI've been using coconut oil on my face for a few months now, and LOVE it! I have always had terrible skin, & nearing 40 hasn't helped. Just yesterday a friend I hadn't seen in several months asked me how my skin looked so great. It is the first compliment I've ever received for my skin! I knew then that I was definitely on the right track!
ReplyDeleteI tried your essential oil combination. It smells good thanks!
ReplyDeleteI've made this. Used it for a few months. Recipe made quite a big batch...since you only use a tsp or so a night. It's in a closed container...plastic type mason jar. I've been out of town for a few days and noticed tinight some little black mildew dots and webs... Any thoughts on keeping it fresher? What is a good preservative? Is the container wrong for a steamy bathroom? I really love this stuff :(
ReplyDeleteHmmm...I've not experienced this but I live in a dry climate. Try making a half batch next time so you can use it up faster. Here's a tip though...I also use this recipe when I shave my legs, that will help you use it up a whole batch :))
DeleteCan I put this in a soap dispenser?
ReplyDeleteJoanne, if you live in a hot climate...the oil will liquify...if that's the case, then yes! However, in temperate temps, the coconut oil will solidify making it impossible to put in a soap dispenser.
DeleteDo you do this morning and night or just once a day? And if I exercise should I cleanse after or just rinse with water? Made mine today, can't wait to try it.
ReplyDeleteAlso, how often should you change washcloths?
DeleteI have "special" (old) washcloths I only use for my face and I change my everyday. I cleanse morning and night. The washcloth looks gross at night after taking off my make-up.

ReplyDeleteI thought from reading Jillee's blog that the one oil had to be Castor Oil and that coconut oil was not recommended because it tended to clog the pores. Did I misread this somehow?
ReplyDeleteHi, I am soon to turn 58. I started cleansing with Olive Oil and castor oil ( 1/2 of each) just a few days ago and it seems to be working fine. I have just ordered pure coconut oil but was planning mainly for body moisturising. At any rate, I would like to try adding some essential oils for mature skin and read that lavender is a good one. I am wondering how much. If there are others I should try...what do you recommend. I know you went over some of this in the original blog but I just want to make sure.
ReplyDeleteI would love to try this but don't see how much of each oil to add.
