Dream-y Sleep Salve ~ SLEEP Remedy

Once again, necessity is the Mother of Invention at my house...

Many of you already know this but, the metabolic blend I shared on the Be Slimmer & Sassier post is my all time favorite sleep blend!  It works for me and many others! However, one little problem popped up (or out) that begged to be dealt with and this is how Dream blend became a Salve...

First of all, let me introduce you to Dream...

Dream is actually a metabolic blend of Cinnamon Bark, Ginger, Peppermint, Lemon and Grapefruit.

Add a few drops to your water during the day and curb your appetite, rev your metabolism or...on your feet at night to SLEEP. Sounds weird I know, but let me explain. The EOs in this blend help balance blood sugar and calm adrenals thus allowing the body to drift into sleep mode when it's time.

The Original DREAM BLEND
________________________________________

20 drops Cinnamon Bark
40 drops Ginger
40 drops Peppermint
40 drops Lemon
40 drops Grapefruit

Add to a 10ml roller bottle and apply liberally to the bottoms of feet and under toes before bedtime.  In ten minutes or so you'll actually feel your body relaxing.

HOWEVER...

Nothing will loosen a roller ball, metal or plastic faster than this blend!  I had to handle the bottle so carefully, always keeping contact with my foot so the ball wouldn't fall out. Unacceptable!  My fix?  Put it in a salve.  Salve is my duct tape in many respects, it just works :)

Add Dream Blend to the basic All Purpose Healing Salve base recipe ~ no more spills and you wake up with soft feet!

what to do...

A full recipe of All Purpose Healing Salve base fills {five} 4 oz jars.  The Dream recipe above is enough to make {two} 4 oz jars. You'll have to adjust accordingly if you want 5 jars of Dreamy Sleep Salve.

Great News and an Update!  Spark Naturals now sells Dream Blend, no need to buy 5 different EOs and drip all those drops, just order the blend!  A 15ml bottle of Dream Blend has approximately 285 drops per bottle.

______________________________________________

Follow the directions for All Purpose Healing Salve base.  Important to Note:  for Dreamy Sleep Salve you will use the same coconut and olive oil base as the Healing Salve, replacing Healing Salve oils with the Dream Blend of oils.

Add 90 drops of Dream Blend to one 4oz glass jar.  I like to use 4 oz jam jars however, you can use glass jars of your choice.

________________________________

Apply Dream-y Sleep Salve liberally to the bottom and top of both feet after you've climbed into bed and massage in.  You won't to share it with the floor :)

Beth, just an FYI...if you're warned against grapefruit juice interfering with your medication, Grapefruit EO is very different, as it's derived from the rind and has a completely different chemistry than the juice. This is something you can research or google. If you're still concerned, just omit the EO :)

My ginger EO is very smoky in scent, not much scent like when you cut into a slice and must be severely diluted. Did you use ginger EO, CO2, or ginger grass/leaf EO?

Yes, that's my recommendation but you can reduce the amount if you like :)

Hi Rebecca! I love your recipes! Can't wait to try them! I am a holistic wellness practitioner and also suffer from a few of the ailments that the L.L.P. Salve will help with. I do have a question about the EOs, when you mention 30 drops, is that PER 4 OZ. JAR? I'm not quite clear on it and would love to be able to make this ASAP. Awesome blog! Thanks!

At September 23, 2013 at 2:47 PM , Blogger Rebecca said...

I would try 4 drops 20 minutes before a meal. It's also great to drink in water when you're craving sweets!

For the LLP Blend, yes...30 per jar as you'll only be using a small amount with each application.

My mom is on blood pressure medicine along with a couple others. Are there any interactions with medicines/medical conditions that you are aware of? should she only use it in a diffuser instead of a salve? She is on a high dose of sleep meds and still cannot sleep! I really think if she were able to it would help with some of her medical issues. Thanks!!

At September 23, 2013 at 9:56 PM , Blogger Rebecca said...

The salve should be fine, the PURE Grapefruit EO in the blend is pressed from the rind, it's not grapefruit juice, there is a difference.

Have her use it sparingly, just enough to lightly cover the soles of her feet and under her toes.

Irma, I let my salve "rest" for about 8 hrs...so it has a chance to cool through and through. I let the jar sit on the counter with a paper towel over them to keep dust etc out.

Thank you Rebecca, I misread the recipe and didn't add enough wax so I melted more wax and added it to the mixture. Problem solved! Sindy, yes...there are different grades of EOs. I only use and recommend PURE essential oils as I've found them the most effective for me and my family. Most pure EOs can be taken internally, always read the label on the bottle for the proper direction :)

After reading, reading and reading some more, I'm sitting down to place an order with Spark Naturals. I'd like to purchase EO's to make a blend to help my teen son fall asleep more easily. I feel like the more I read, the more blends I find that are recommended for sleep! Peaceful Child, Hibernation, SS, Dream, etc. It sounds like an extra benefit of the SS blend is I could use it myself for weight loss, but then should I choose SS1 or SS2. Can you help me in choosing one?!??

I made this a few days ago. I didn't have the beeswax pellets though. I had Murray's Australian beeswax. When I was melting these ingredients I ended up adding the oils to it and freaked out because I should have melted the ingredients first and then added the oils while it was cooling down. For some odd reason I didn't want the EO's to cook out. Plus the Murray's beeswax didn't melt all the way so I have part liquid and part cream. I couldn't find cinnamon bark oil or plain ginger oil so I used cinnamon & ginger oil. I used this for two nights now and put my toasties on my feet so I won't spread the oil on my sheets. I don't know if putting these on and walking around before bed time will affect me relaxing. My brain is super active when I go to sleep. Even when if I have to wake up in the middle of the night to to go the rest room and then go back to sleep my brain picks up on the over activity routine. This have caused my brain to go blank which makes it easier for me to fall asleep. Next time I make this I will need to find beeswax pellets and melt this all the way through before I add the oils.

I feel your pain, I remember those days well! For the young ones, I would try Lavender first, even Lavender and Marjoram (another great sleep blend). While I believe the Dreamy Sleep Salve is safe to use, I prefer to keep it simple with the little ones. Usually their sleep issues are different than adults - Lavender and Marjoram just might be a great blend for your daughter :)

Salve shouldn't mold unless water got in it somehow. When it does get past it's prime it will start to crystalize - depending on climate, 6 to 8 months is a good rule of thumb for prime time salve :)

Rebecca,
I made a batch of Healing Salve the other day and made a couple of Dream blends for myself and a couple friends. I'm used to taking 1 or 2 AdvilPM caplets EVERY.SINGLE.NIGHT; otherwise, I won't sleep. I must tell you, after using the salve, I haven't taken the AdvilPM at all and, although I still wake up a few times a night, I am able to fall back asleep right away!
After reading this post again, I just noticed that I didn't even put as much of the dream blend in the salve as recommended, yet, it has worked wonders. I'm so grateful to you for sharing these recipes and for your great advice! Thank you!

Hi, Rebecca. Just a quick question on this sleepy salve. I'm pregnant (four months in) and can't use cinnamon oil. I was reading about Doterra's Balance blend and found it has metabolic properties as well as aides in hyperactivity (and as an added bonus, I can put it on my husband's back for pain). So my question is, if I opt to use the Balance blend instead, do I need 90 drops still for 2 jars or would the number of drops be different for a different blend? Thanks so much!

I thought I might put a review on here to help others since there's a lot of questions in the comments but not a ton of people who have actually tried the blend and I wished there were more reviews of results when I was deciding whether or not to make this so I hope I help someone. I made this, have been using it the last few nights and it REALLY DOES WORK! I am a skeptic and have been rather anti-EO for years despite some friends swearing by them. With Rebecca's awesome blog, and Spark Naturals, I've finally been able to use and benefit from oils lately. (I don't know Rebecca and she probably thinks I'm a little crazy for writing this huge testimonial, and I am not affiliated with Spark Naturals) I mixed this blend up in a roller bottle (didn't have all the supplies for the salve) with some jojoba oil as a carrier and I can assure you, it really works! I wish I could attach images here because I wear a pedometer to bed that tracks my sleep and I wish I could show you my sleep graphs when I use the blend vs. when I don't. You can't fake those results! When I don't use the blend, I consistently wake up about 7 times a night. The last couple nights of using the blend, the graphs show NO movement between 1am and when I wake up around 6:15. It's AMAZING to me how this works. Another thing I've noticed is that I sleep much more soundly and much more deeply when using this blend. My husband wakes up a couple hours before me for work and bangs around the kitchen and bathroom before he leaves. Now, not even his alarm wakes me! I really do feel so rested now as I know I'm getting a deeper sleep. For those of you looking for help falling asleep, I will say that I don't necessarily notice that this makes me sleepy as much as it helps me stay asleep and get a more restful sleep. I should also note that I really wouldn't consider myself to have a sleeping problem like some may have so I can't say that this blend would offer total relief from diagnosable sleep issues. I just wanted to share my personal experience with this blend and let people know that it is not a waste of money, it really helps! One more thing that I have seen asked in the comments is if the cinnamon can be omitted or substituted due to either allergies or because it's the priciest oil on the list. IMHO the cinnamon is essential to this blend. When I originally blended this up, I forgot to order the cinnamon oil so I decided to try it without it. I used it for a few nights without the cinnamon and not only did I not see any improvement in my sleep, i think it actually wired me and I found myself extremely restless all night. Finally, I got the cinnamon and added it and boy, what a difference. I know Rebecca has explained why this blend works and she must be right, but you DO need ALL the elements of this blend, even the cinnamon though it is expensive. A good alternative would be buying the pre-mixed Dream blend from Spark Naturals. I'm glad I ended up buying all the ingredients, though since I can tell I'll be making a lot of this! Thank you so much, Rebecca! You are a genius!
