Naked Salve!

...who said carrier oil couldn't be fun?

I've really been meaning to do this for a long time, make Naked Salve!  Free from the chains that bind, free to be whatever I need it to be, free to stand on it's own merit and bust out of the stereotypical carrier oil standard...

First of all, a quick rundown on carrier oil and why EO users love it and need it...A carrier oil is the vegetable oil from the fatty part of a plant, namely the nut seed or kernel and each carrier oil has it's own therapeutic benefits.

Naked Salve has more than a few!

Carrier oils are used to dilute essential oils and faithful EO users have their favorites.  My preference is coconut oil, an organic, hand processed coconut oil with lots of benefits and nutrients all it's own.  Coconut oil is a natural moisturizer as well as antibacterial.  Added olive oil has of anti-oxidants, including hydroxytyrosol and, anti-inflammatory properties.  The benefits of coconut and olive oils added to the healing properties of pure essentials makes a winning combination.

Many of you have made the original All Purpose Healing Salve, it's a workhorse of a salve isn't it?

Well, Naked Salve is All Purpose Healing Salve without the EOs making it very versatile and emollient carrier oil.

Naked Salve
_________________________________

1 cup coconut oil
1 cup organic olive oil (I use extra virgin)
4 tablespoons organic beeswax pastilles (generous tablespoons)
1/2 teaspoon vitamin e oil is optional

A large recipe like this will fill FIVE - 4 oz glass jam jars.  If you want less, adjust the recipe.  If you would like to fill more small jars than large, adjust accordingly.  It's nice to have a few small jars to take with you.  The top photo shows 1/4oz in the front row and 1oz glass jars in the back.

Note:  glass isn't necessary when your salve is NAKED :)

On low heat, melt the coconut, olive oil and beeswax in a warm bath, stirring with a knife every few minutes until melted.  You don't have to babysit the melt, an occasional stir will do! The melting process will take at least 20 min, you want a slow melt.

Pour into jars of your choice and let cool.

Put a paper towel over the jars while cooling and wait to cover with lids until completely cooled down.  Shelf life is approximately 4 months.

Use your new Naked Salve as you would a carrier oil ~ scoop out the amount you need with a swipe of a finger.

Place it on the palm of your hand and add your EOs, apply topically.

As a bonus, I'm sharing my most recent use for Naked Salve!  If you or your family spend any amount of time in the cold, you'll want this tip up your sleeve, works great!

Winter Warming Salve
_____________________________

Black Pepper essential oil
1/4 teaspoon Naked Salve

Black Pepper is anti-inflammatory, analgesic and stimulates circulation.  Even though it's considered a warming oil, it's not a hot oil, a big benefit should it get near the eyes (think kids!).

This is how I used it with great success:  After shoveling snow for a half hour my finger tips were throbbing with cold - I had to go inside to warm up!  Noticing my freshly made Naked Salve on the counter, I decided to put Black Pepper to the test.  1/4 teaspoon Naked Salve in palm of my hand and 2 drops Black Pepper - made sure I massaged my throbbing fingertips first, I then rubbed my hands together for a minute.

Pain disappeared, hands warmed and back in the gloves they went! Pretty amazing and one trick I'll be sure to employ before I start shoveling even MORE snow today :)

As always, enjoy 10% off every Spark Naturals order.

Wonderful stuff! Can't wait to try it. I like to use a chopstick to stir with, then I can just toss it...gets the bubbles out of the sides of the jar, etc. I just grab a couple of extra when we have sushi, etc.
Or buy a bulk bag of them.

Sounds wonderful. I have never used EO's and am wondering whether the black pepper EO can be added to the salve mixture before putting it into jars. I am thinking stocking stuffers, small gifts, etc.

Rebecca, can you weigh the 4 Tablespoons of beeswax you use and tell me what that is in ounces? I rendered local beeswax and mine is in a huge block! Thanks, I love the salve and have given it away as gifts to all my Pilates studio clients and they want more!

1.7 ounces by my postal scale Candace. Hope that helps! Happy salve making :)

Absolutely Debra. Per 4oz jar, I would add 90 drops. If you using smaller jars you can adjust accordingly.

Hmmm I live in Florida so I don't really deal with too much cold...but if it helps circulation and tingling in the hands I will try it. Does it help with pain?

Rebecca,
When this salve cools is it soft consistency? Also once cooled can I mix n match EOs in the salve and mix it in? Would the consistency be good to do that? I think this is easier and can keep some handy for whatever the ailment. Thanks in advance

When it cools, it's more solid than liquid, though it will be somewhat soft. It's easier to add the EOs in before it cools. One thing I do when I'm making salve is to add the EOs to the container I'm putting them in before I add the coconut oil/beeswax melted mixture to them. When the hot stuff goes in, it mixes the EOs for you so no additional stirring is necessary.

And you can always gently re-melt any salve you have if you want to add EOs to it - just be sure to use the double-boiler method and NOT the microwave. :)

Hope this helps answer your questions. :)

I recently made the salve and then added the EOs for the healing salve and some for the dream salve to half of the recipe each. Mine did not have a very pleasant smell even after the EOs so I remelted it and doubled the amount of EOs I put in each container. It smells better, but still has that smell that I think is the olive oil. Is it 90 drops per 4 oz container? Thank you for the help.

This is fantastic! Do you think I could sub sweet almond oil for the olive oil? I'm wondering if the consistency would be about the same.

Juliette, I've never tried making my salve with almond oil. If you try it, let us know how it turns out :)

Just curious if the olive oil and coconut oil mix stains your clothes when you use the salve? I made a back rub salve with only olive oil and my sheets are permanently stained now so I'm hesitant to make salves again.

Any thoughts of a different essential oil that would work instead of black pepper? I don't have any on hand and would love to make this up for my husband before the storm hits the eat coast

Cinnamon works great but there's a danger of it getting in the eyes if it's on the fingers. Black Pepper is safest in that regard.

I found your site a few days ago, and all I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you!! This was so easy to make. I halved the recipe and stored in a glass jar I had on hand.. Used some with a drop of eucalyptus oil on the bottom of my son's feet to help quiet a cough so he could sleep. Last night re-melted another 2T on low heat, and added eucalyptus and peppermint to make a vaporub that worked like a charm. My nose was feeling raw this morning from sniffles of an allergy, and a teeny amount of the naked salve on my nose and surrounding area immediately soothed the rawness.

My hubby keeps giving me funny faces at all of my experiments, and my DSD keeps asking if there's anything I don't make. I tell her if I can find a way to make it just as good at home, there's no reason to buy the store bought stuff!

I am making a basket of beauty products found here and on One Good Thing by Jillee and I am trying to go with a lavender theme. How many drops of lavender essential oil should I use and should I add other oils too? I have never used SO before so I can use any advice you can give. Thanks so my much!

I want to make some Warm salve for my son. He is a snow plower and want to make some so he could have in his truck out on the cold long nights. He doesn't have the time to mix them. I was wondering if I could make them into a mix like the "Dream salve"? How many black pepper drops to how much oil mixture.?

Make up Naked Salve and add 90 drops per 4oz jar. OR, he can tip the bottle on each finger "neat" (like dabbing perfume) and massage in, I use it neat on occasion too!

I was wondering about cinnamon. I was actually curious if the black pepper and cinnamon would jive (I know they do in chai tea). I was thinking of using your black pepper recipe and putting part of a cinnamon stick on top for extra scent and decoration.

Black Pepper is also in her arthritis pain relief mix: http://www.campwander.blogspot.com/2013/12/arthritis-pain-relief-blend.html

In addition to the oils she mentions though I find the following helpful for pain relief: wintergreen (has similar anti-inflammatory effect as aspirin),peppermint (think menthol), fennel, lavender, and chamomile (muscle relaxer). I have also heard that Balsam Fir is a good one for pain but haven't tried it yet. I have fibromyalgia so I've had personal experience using these! Hope this helps!

I have a few questions, this is my first time making a salve or using essential oils of any kind. I tried to half the recipe and it is quite greasy - is that normal? Also, is there any way you could use a lotion as a carrier oil? By using a few drops of the EO in a dab of lotion would it work the same way? Also, I am not a fan of the black pepper oil aroma, could I add another just for the scent? Last question (for now anyway) - is there anyway to turn this salve into a lotion or body butter? I would appreciate any and all help. I really want to learn more about EO's and start using them on a regular basis =)

At December 31, 2013 at 8:12 PM , Blogger Rebecca said...

You can certainly use a natural lotion as a carrier if you prefer. You can always substitute your own choice of EOs, everyone has different preferences I just post what is working for me and my family please feel free to make any adjustments to suit yours :)

There are many recipes out there for natural lotions and creams - I would spend some time researching what sounds suitable for you and your family.

Rebecca thank you so much for your advice. I really want to try the warming properties of the black pepper oil, I am thinking or mixing it with vanilla (for the scent). I am very excited about learning to use different EO's and I am so happy that I found yours and your sister's blog!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!!

How does coconut Oil differ from coconut butter

Would you recommend this for a babies circumcision instead of petroleum jelly?

At January 4, 2014 at 4:49 PM , Blogger Rebecca said...

Absolutely! Organic coconut oil is anti-microbial, Naked Salve would be excellent. You might even add a drop of pure Frankincense to the application along with the Salve if you have it.

I was just applying the healing salve (from my very first batch!) to my poor raw-from-constantly-blowing nose, and wondered if I added Respire to the naked salve and applied to my nose and surrounding area, if that might help with my congestion? How many drops would it take to a bit of salve? I'm happy with my first batch of salve, but will definitely use different coconut oil next time to make it a bit creamier. :)
