Turn Your Shampoo into a Moisturizing Scalp Scrub
Is Your Scalp Snowing?
Even if dandruff isn't your thing, winter weather and all that hat wearing can dry out your scalp causing occasional snow flurries. Here's a quick and easy treatment to exfoliate the dry skin and leave some much needed moisture behind with a sweet essential oil that will love your scalp.
This is so easy, use your favorite shampoo as the "carrier" for both the exfoliant and moisture and, remember...sulfate free shampoo is best.

shampoo, baking soda & patchouli
2 drops pure Patchouli essential oil
I can hear some of you groaning over my choice of Patchouli...it has that effect on people. However, don't sell this EO short, it has incredible properties: pure Patchouli from the cablin species contains over 20 sesquiterpenes allowing the essential oil to cross the blood-brain barrier and protect the central nervous system. FYI - This is one of the reasons Patchouli is included in Jeddy's Blend, an effective blend of EOs that helps with ADD and ADHD. Patchouli is welcome on my scalp anytime!
Another reason for adding Patchouli to a Scalp Scrub is it's ability to increase circulation, stimulate regeneration of cells and firm up sagging skin and muscle. The astringent properties can promote hair growth and even help fasten teeth to gums. Patchouli is also a great cleansing agent effective against dermatitis, eczema and even hemorrhoids.
Are you convinced of Patchouli's merits for your scalp yet?

Just 1 teaspoon baking soda...
Considered a "miracle in a box", baking soda has been used for decades and proven itself as an all purpose staple over and over again. It's alkaline, softens sebum and debris allowing for a cleaner scalp with less dandruff or flaking.
In summary: add 2 drops pure Patchouli, 1 teaspoon baking soda to a single application of shampoo in a small bowl, blend together with your finger. Use as needed.
Now you're ready to wash, exfoliate and moisturize your hair all in one easy step :)
As always, enjoy 10% off every Spark Naturals order.

Hi Rebecca, just checking about the comment re the astringent properties of Patchouli slowing hair growth. Is this correct, as I would not want to slow hair growth, but increase it if possible? Also, I am no longer able to do a search of your website - is anyone else having the same problem please, as I was always able to before?
Thanks so much. Tania.
Love this, but I was an alternative to the essential oil? Being in a small town finding oils is hard to find.
Is the shampoo in the photo Shea moisture? Trying to find a pre-made natural shampoo...the ones I've made DIY just aren't doing it for us.
Spark Naturals oils you can order online (relatively inexpensive) and you can get 10% off with her code: CAMPWANDER . They arrive quickly and work great!!
There really isn't a substitute for the oils...unless you use a piece of the plant the oil comes from...I think that's less obtainable than the oils are though.
Hope that helps.
I've used Patchouli frequently and it hasn't had any impact on my hair growth. If you follow this patchouli washing with the lavender rosemary hair rinse she makes for Thicker, softer hair (which I use 4 times a week), it increases hair growth, and I would think, would counteract any growth "slowing" the Patchouli might have. Just search for her hair rinse (I think the post is titled Thicker softer hair...or something like that).
Hope that helps.
Rebecca ,Do you know if Spark Naturals is changing the oil of the month rotation for 2014?
Thanks Deb
Tania, I haven't been able to do a search of Rebecca's website for a while. I thought it was just me. :-)
It is, I love it!
They are and the changes should be announced soon!
That'll teach me to not check my email everyday! Thank you for pointing out my TYPO on the blog! Slow growth should be promote growth! Updated :)
With regard to the search feature, what a pain Google's Blogger is! However, never fear the new website is getting closer to being finished so in the meantime...if you need to search anything just google: camp wander (subject) and you'll find the blog link.
Thanks for letting me know Robin, I too thought it was just me!
Rebecca, thanks for the info. that is great to know. I am looking forward to the new website. Happy New Year all.
I thought it was just me, also. Thanks for the update, Rebecca :)
I don't have patchouli yet is there anything that I can use instead? I have Jeddy's blend how much of that would or could I use?
Nora, good alternatives for hair would be Lavender and/or Rosemary. You could try 2 drops of Jeddy's Blend - it would be very relaxing Im sure :)
Are the oils from spark naturals organic do they compare to doterra?? Are they 100 % natural? I have very sensitive skin so I have to be really carefull of what I put on it. I want to start making my own lotions, scrubs and moisturizers and want to use EO but worried I will breakout in a rash. Thanks for any help. :0)
Yes Teri, Spark Naturals oils are high quality and pure enough to take internally as labeled. Every bit as pure as dT or I wouldn't be using them :)
I wash my locks every other day. I missed your reply so I tried it on the 5th I used 4 drops of Jeddy's blend. It was the most relaxing shower EVER! I wasn't fond of how it made my ends feel. I washed my hair normally on the 7th. My hair was ridiculously oily the morning of the 9th. I saw your response that morning and tried 2 drops Jeddy's blend and 2 Rosemary. But I only made enough to do my roots. I then rewashed my ends and only conditioned the ends so far today it's shiny and is actually holding a curl. I think I've found a new way to wash! Just gotta figure out an in between solution. I can't imagine doing it every time can be good.
I have had an annoying patch of dry, flaking skin at the front of my scalp. I have tried so many different remedies to no avail. I've tried putting different EO's in my shampoo like rosemary and tea tree. I've tried dry brushing that patch. I've put an array of stuff on my scalp: almond oil, coconut oil, and tons of healing salves. Not only has nothing worked, but I now usually have a lovely oily section of hair hanging in my face.
I get nervous about using things like baking soda since I just did a major hair color change from blonde to red and I really don't to wash all my color down the drain.
Any advice? Anyone?
It sounds like you've tried just about everything but I have another suggestion that you may not like but having recently had skin issues clear up during a sugar detox, you might try cutting sugar and processed food way back if not completely. The changes in the body are amazing when we give it what it needs :)
